Better targeting for Facebook ads: mine your own interests

Better targeting for Facebook ads: mine your own interests

If your ads don’t feel like they’re working there are a lot of things we can tweak to get better results.

One of those is targeting. But what do I mean?

When you are creating your ad, and you’re in the “Ad Set” you can choose “Interests” – this is one of the best tools you have at hand.

But what should you put in there?

I have a great way to mine for ideas; it’s in your own Facebook profile.

Here’s how you can find your own Interests and use them in your next ad

Did you know that you are served specific ads based on posts & pages you’ve liked, things you’ve typed in the search bar and websites you’ve visited?

Facebook calls this your “Interests”.

You can find your interests by going to:

Account > Settings and Privacy > Settings > Ads > Ad Settings > Categories used to Reach You

Why would you look at your interests?

Quite often

Your client is you

or 2 years ago

In which case, your interests are her interests and you can get great ideas from there. Alternatively, in a market research interview, your interviewee may be willing to let you see their interests. You might need to teach them how to find them 🙂

How did you go with the video?

The best way to make use of this video is to work along with me.

Watch it again and:

  1. Find your interests
  2. Create an ad using one of those interests

If you get stuck comment or get in touch with me and I’ll make another video

Are Facebook Ads worth it in 2021?

Are Facebook Ads worth it in 2021?

Are Facebook ads worth it in 2021?

Is this the real question – because the easy answer for me is yes….

I would say that the real questions are:

  • What is valuable to YOU?
  • What is your time worth?
  • What is your content worth if no-one sees it?

Is it worth making content if NO-ONE sees it?
It’s quite likely that is the current reality of your Facebook content….

What How Why Facebook Pixel

What How Why Facebook Pixel

Have you just gone live with your gorgeous website?

What now?

I have a LOT of ideas for things you can do now and the number one thing I recommend is to get the Facebook© Pixel on your website!

But what the heck is the pixel? What does it do? Why bother? And how do you get it on your website?

All the answers are in the video below.

And if you’re getting a website created by me, this is what the pixel is all about and why I think it’s important for YOUR business.

You can watch the video here:

If you’re folding washing or on a walk you can listen to it here:

Or if you like reading, here are the main highlights:

What is the Facebook pixel?

Basically, it’s a piece of code you can put on your website that will track if any Facebook users have been to your site.

So what?

Well, if someone has been to your website, you know that they are interested in what you have to offer. And maybe they are thinking about working with you.

If you have the Facebook pixel on your site, Facebook collects that information for you to use when you run ads. You can do cool things like place ads infront of people who have been to your website or get the ads robot to find more people like the people who signed up for your thing or bought your thing.

Why put the Facebook pixel on your website?

This is the big question.

Becuase a lot of people say “but I’m not ready to run ads on Facebook yet”.

I hear you. But one day if/when you decide to, if you’ve had the pixel on your site all of that time, Facebook is going to have some data about your ideal client already and give you a delicious head start on your ads intel. This will make your ads cheaper and more effective. Yay.

Data is a business asset. Knowing exactly what kindof people sign up for your freebie or buy your products and having a robot who can find more of them is a dream come true.

IF NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE RIGHT NOW, JUST TRUST ME. THIS IS MY JOB.

How do you get the pixel on your website?

It depends on your website.
If I’m building your site, I will use a plugin to get the code in the right part of the site.

If you’re using WordPress I recommend either “Pixel My Site” or “Header and Footer Scripts”.

If you have a Wix website, instructions can be found by Googling “put pixel on wix site”. I won’t share a link directly because it will become outdated. Google search is a wonderful thing.

If you have a Squarespace site, my advice is the same as Wix: instructions can be found by Googling “put pixel on wix site”. I won’t share a link directly because it will become outdated. Google search is a wonderful thing.

What to do first to set up your online marketing

What to do first to set up your online marketing

Whether you are online only, bricks and mortar only, service based or product based and whatever mix of those 4, there are some things I recommend ALL businesses set up FIRST.

Obviously, every business has distinct needs and every industry has different recommendations that I would make. The recoommendations in this post apply to EVERYONE 🙂

This post if for you if you are very new to it all and you haven’t set up very much or you’re wondering what to focus on FIRST.

If you already have a website and Facebook you would probably benefit more from my other post about the next steps after Facebook and website set up which you can read here:

Now, if you’re at the very beginning, what do you need?

I have explained it all here in this video below:

Or if you’re out on a walk or folding washing you can listen to it here:

Or you can read about it here:

#1 Facebook Business Page

Whether you want to be active on Facebook or not, I still recommend that everyone set up a business page for your business. NOT a personal profile, but a PAGE.

If you want to really focus on your website for ownership issues, or you just don’t like Facebook, I would still encourage you to have presence on the Face-beast.

Facebook pages show up in Google searches easily and a lot of people will search Facebook BEFORE they Google search.

If you aren’t really on Facebook becuase you love Instagram more – I would STILL recommend at least having a presence. You will thank me later 🙂

#2 Create a website

A website is a business asset. Everyone “Googles it” these days and if you don’t even have a simple one page site you are missing out on customers.

AND if you ONLY have a presence on Facebook you risk putting all of your eggs in one basket.

Having said that, I made $10k in my business before I had a website so it’s not the FIRST step but it is a VERY.IMPORTANT.THING.FOR.EVERY.BUSINESS. So get a website.

#3 Fonts

If you aren’t cashed up enough to see a graphic designer and get your branding created professionaly I recommend you choose at least 2-3 fonts that you are going to stick to for now.

One heading font

One sub-heading font and

One paragraph/body font

I recomend you check out Canva and find a design in their templates that you like then use the 2-3 fonts on that design.

You can always get professional branding later or change your fonts later. Just don’t change then every week or people won’t be able to develop a visual relationship with your business.

#4 Colours

Just like fonts, it’s important to have some visual consistency in your online presence.

From that Canva design you liked, you might be able to choose 1-3 colours to stick with for now.

I recommend Black and White and 1-2 other colours. Even just one colour + black + white. Even just black + white.

Keep it simple for now.

And be consistent.

You can get fancy later when you have more clarity about your business and audience.
